An architecture of sound?
It seems that most of the commentary about the workplace these days is about distractions, acoustical interruptions that interfere with the flow of work and affect our productivity. Yet, in other places, there are sounds experienced as background that we appreciate as part of their unique ambiance.
This article, "Dear Architects: Sound Matters," is a rather marvelous reflection on the acoustical differences of spaces and how they influence our thinking and behaviors. Beyond the philosophy, the article is a very well done piece of multimedia journalism that the New York Times is doing so well these days. Tune in to its 3-D sounds.
